If We Love God

If you love Me, keep My commandments.
– John 14:15 –

Jesus knows that our claim to love God does not always mean that we actually love God. The evidence is not found in bold words but in obedient deeds. We can say that we love our spouses, but if we speak harshly to them and despise them in our hearts, then our words are empty. Real love proves itself through action. So if we love God, we will keep His commandments. If we do not keep His commandments, we do not love God. The truth is clear and simple.

We do not love God as much as we claim because we are sinners. Jesus died to pay for our sinful lack of love for God. The Holy Spirit gives us new hearts to love God. This is why we need to study the Word of God, so that we do not merely “love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth” (1 John 3:18). We must strive to know God and His Word more carefully so that we may obey His will more carefully.
