One Heart for God

I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within them, and take the stony heart out of their flesh, and give them a heart of flesh.
– Ezekiel 11:19 –

The sinful heart we received at our birth was a heart of stone, hardened to God, unwilling to obey His Word. The unity we shared with the human race was a unity of rebellion against God. However, the promise of the new covenant contains the promise of a new heart. God saves us when His Spirit gives us new, soft hearts to trust and follow Jesus.

When the Lord does this we are joined together as one people with a new love for God. We receive “one heart” for Him. We now “taste and see the Lord is good” (Psalm 34:8). We now hear and delight in the words of the Lord. If we want to promote the unity of the church, we need to make the preaching and teaching of God’s Word central to our lives and to the work of the church. Our worship must be God centered, not man centered. We must do whatever it takes to keep our hearts fixed together on Christ.
