Walking in the Daylight

Let us walk properly, as in the day, not in revelry and drunkenness, not in lewdness and lust, not in strife and envy.
– Romans 13:13 –

When the Lord redeemed us from sin and death, He called us out of the darkness into the light (1 Peter 2:9). God shined on our hearts and gave us spiritual eyes to see His glory (2 Corinthians 4:6). The Spirit gave us hearts to believe, repent, and be saved. Now we live in a new way, not in the darkness of lust, envy, and strife. Now that we are light in the Lord, we must walk as children of light (Ephesians 5:8).

If there is lust, envy, and strife in our lives, then we do not walk in the light of Christ. We walk in darkness. We walk in a manner unworthy and inappropriate for those called to brighten the world around us like candles on a lampstand, like a city set on a hill (Matthew 5:14–16).

Scripture does not allow any other option. Selfishness and quarreling come from walking in the night. They come from saying yes to our flesh and yielding ourselves to the darkness of the world. There can be no unity when we walk in darkness. The light of truth should sober us, warn us, and provoke us to change.

For this reason Paul says, “Let us walk properly.” Let us walk as new creations in Jesus Christ. Let us walk as those who love God with all of our hearts and love others as we love ourselves. Let us walk, united together, as those who are satisfied in Christ, so that we’ll not envy and strive against others, but help them see that Jesus Christ is Lord.
